Arvier

“Ascent after ascent,
since the heroic era of cycling”

Here is the birthplace of Maurice Garin, chief protagonist of the heroic era of cycling and the first winner of the Tour de France. He trained on these roads, winding and tiring, gritting his teeth, holding strong and constructing, ascent after ascent, his own palmarès.

Halfway between Aosta and Courmayeur, the historical village of Arvier rises up (776 meters), overlooked by the La Mothe Castle (built in 1290). The steepest slope in the valley, warmed by the sun, is covered with the vineyards that produce Enfer, the traditional red wine of the Aosta Valley with Protected Designation of Origin.

Throughout the valley, you breathe in a sense of history: from the remains of the Roman roads, to the antique water and saw mills in the hamlet of Grand Haury; from the examples of Late Middle Age architecture in the hamlet of La Ravoire, to the evocative cylindrical tower of the Montmayeur Castle.
