Champorcher

“Among water full of fish
and fields of golden rye”

The Ayasse river dominates the view over the valley with its spectacular waterfalls and flows through Champorcher (1427 meters), a village of medieval origin which has developed around the evocative ruins of a feudal castle which was destroyed in the first half of the 13th century.

Champorcher was one of the favourite spots of king Vittorio Emanuele II, who in the XIX century made it one of his hunting reserves, as its fauna was very abundant. Champorcher is renowned for the cultivation of rye, a typical base ingredient in bread, which can also be prepared with chestnuts, dried fruit and cumin. Enjoy it fresh or dry, and always break it using the typical Copapan.

The artisan craft of the area is hemp working, which is still today made on wooden looms, where towels, sheets and all kinds of handmade products are manufactured, accurately finished and embroidered by hand.

Action Champorcher

For lovers of sport fishing, the fish-filled waters of the Ayasse river are ideal. In this summer fishing reserve, you can practise daily from the beginning of May until the end of October. At the end of your day, make a stop to look out from the panoramic viewpoint over the waterfalls which are created by the river throwing itself dramatically into the gorge below. Happy fishing!

From here the High Route nr. 2 begins: one of the two most spectacular hiking routes in the Aosta Valley, which winds through various altitudes to finish at Courmayeur. Champorcher is a convenient departure point for a hike to Lake Miserin and the Dondena Refuge, in the shadow of the ‘tooth’ of Mont Avic.

With the arrival of snow, Champorcher transforms into a true paradise for lovers of winter sports. Snowboarding, cross-country skiing, and ice skating, but in particular alpine skiing. Equipped with modern ski lifts, the local resort offers slopes of varying levels of difficulty, where the most expert skiers can try out exciting runs and where some peaks can be reached by ski touring.
