Set against the skyline, the imposing peak of the Matterhorn, 4478 metres of rock that looks down over a spectacular semi-circle of crests, points, glaciers and passes, is the mountain, the like of which no other can be found. With a very pronounced pyramidal form, it stands isolated from the rest of the mountain chain. It was first climbed from the Swiss side on 14 July 1865 by Edward Whymper.
